Background

The Medical Society of Delaware created the Delaware Medical Education Foundation in 1992 to allow the Society to:

  • Improve and expand its continuing medical education program, thereby providing Delaware physicians with up-to-the-minute clinical information in the ever-changing field of medical science. It also sponsors programs to educate the public on medical issues.

  • Administer the Physicians' Health Program in conjunction with the Delaware's Board of Medical Practice.

Mission

Integral to the Society's mission is ensuring excellent patient care. Our bylaws state "this Society shall strive to enhance the betterment of the public health."

'This nonprofit, tax-exempt organization receives funding from the Medical Society's membership, pharmaceutical and other health-related firms, private corporations and the allied health professional communities and citizens of Delaware.

The goals and objectives of this Society are to promote the science and the art of medicine among its members and to uphold the ideals and the ethical principles of the medical profession. (taken from the Bylaws of the Medical Society of Delaware)

Continuing Medical Education

MSD is one of two organizations in Delaware able to award AMA Category 1 credit to educational programs, uniquely positioning the Society as a principal source of convenient, high- quality CME for Delaware physicians of all specialties;

MSD develops educational programs custom-tailored to meet the needs of Delaware's physicians by meeting with the chairs of hospital education departments throughout the state and by analyzing the ongoing input received from program directors and those who attend Society sponsored programs.

MSD provides CME opportunities through dozens of individual programs - at its annual meeting, through its lecture series in various hospitals, and through its official publication, the Delaware Medical Journal. Through the auspices of the Delaware Medical Education Foundation, Ltd., the Medical Society is able to enhance its role by sponsoring more and better education programs throughout the state.

Looking Forward

As it grows and strengthens, the Delaware Medical Education Foundation, Ltd. , will continue to support an ever- increasing range of educational programs for Delaware physicians - - and laypeople - - that are located close by, of modest or no cost, and, most importantly, truly needed to keep abreast of new developments in the art and science of medicine.

With every program held, with every physician helped, the Foundation reaffirms its commitment to its two founding principles: education and upholding the ideals of the medical profession
